RentalTide connects to Klaviyo with a private API key. Once connected, your renters show up in Klaviyo as profiles and your bookings arrive as events you can trigger flows and build segments on.
Only renters who opted in to marketing are added to a Klaviyo list. Everyone else is sent as a profile with no subscription, so Klaviyo will not send them marketing email.
Before you start
- A Klaviyo account (any plan).
- A RentalTide account with the Integrations permission.
Create a private API key in Klaviyo
- In Klaviyo, open Settings → API keys.
- Click Create private API key.
- Name it
RentalTideand choose Custom key. - Give it these scopes:
- Accounts: read
- Events: read and write
- Lists: read and write
- Metrics: read
- Profiles: read and write
- Subscriptions: write
- Create the key and copy it. It starts with
pk_.
Connect it in RentalTide
- Go to Settings → Integrations and open Klaviyo.
- Paste the private key.
- Leave Send existing renters and the last 24 months of bookings on if you want your history in Klaviyo. It runs in the background.
- Click Connect.
- Choose the list that opted-in renters should join.
What gets sent
Profiles
Each renter is a profile with their email, first and last name, phone number (when it can be read as a full international number) and their RentalTide renter id as the external id.
Events
| Klaviyo metric | Sent when | Revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Placed Booking | A booking is made | Yes |
| Checked In | Staff check the renter in | No |
| Completed Rental | The rental is finished | No |
| Cancelled Booking | A booking is cancelled | No |
Every event carries the booking id, item name and category, location, start and end dates, booking type, quantity, party size, status, coupon code and currency. Only Placed Booking carries the booking total, so Klaviyo's revenue reports count each booking once.
Events are sent about a minute after they happen. Maintenance holds and internal bookings are never sent. You can switch each metric off in the Klaviyo settings in RentalTide.
Historical events
Events sent by the backfill carry the property Backfill = true. If a flow should only react to new bookings, add a trigger filter: Backfill is not true. Set this up before you run a backfill against live flows.
Marketing consent
- A renter who opts in in RentalTide (the "Sign up for deals and updates?" question at checkout, or the preference center) is added to your chosen Klaviyo list. Klaviyo's double opt-in setting for that list still applies to new sign-ups.
- A renter who opts out, unsubscribes from all marketing, bounces or reports spam in RentalTide is unsubscribed from email marketing in Klaviyo.
- A renter who unsubscribes in Klaviyo or marks a Klaviyo email as spam is suppressed in RentalTide within about 15 minutes. SMS unsubscribes in Klaviyo are applied to their phone number the same way.
- Renters RentalTide has no opt-in for are sent as profiles only.
SMS subscriptions are not pushed to Klaviyo. If you collect SMS consent in Klaviyo, it stays there.
Troubleshooting
"Klaviyo rejected this key." The key is not a private key, or it is missing a scope. Create a new key with the scopes above.
"Klaviyo stopped accepting this key." The key was deleted or its scopes changed in Klaviyo. Nothing is sent until you reconnect. Queued events are kept and go out once you connect a working key.
An event is missing. Check that the renter has an email address and that the metric is switched on. The Sync section shows how many events are queued and how many failed.
Disconnecting
Open Klaviyo in Settings → Integrations and click Disconnect. RentalTide stops sending data and stops reading unsubscribes. Everything already in Klaviyo stays there.
